Mar 10, 2020

Freelance contracting is the perfect solution for contractors who want the flexibility without the fuss.

Our payment solution, Freelance from Crest Plus, is specially designed for self-employed contractors.  It’s great for those who do not want or need to go to the effort or cost of setting up and running their own limited company, or the cost of working via Umbrella, but who need a payments partner because they are contracted to their end hirer via an employment agency.

  • A great, speedy solution for when you are working outside IR35 via an agency
  • We provide employment assessments to confirm that you can work compliantly with HMRC’s rules as a self-employed freelance contractor
  • Minimal cost and administration – you get can set up and ready to work without unnecessary hassle or delay.
  • Saves you from the cost and effort of setting up and administering a limited company for your contract assignments.
  • A cost-effective alternative to Umbrella.

Paying tax as a Freelance contractor

Freelance contracting is a great, flexible solution, but it does mean you’re responsible for paying your own tax and National Insurance.  However, we can help you do this correctly and compliantly, so don’t be put off.

As a freelancer, you will be registered as self-employed by HMRC.  This means you will be responsible for completing a self-assessment tax return each year, and paying the correct tax. Crest Plus registered contractors can take advantage of our preferential rates on our self-assessment tax returns service, whereby we take care of working out what tax you have to pay.

It’s a good idea to get into the habit of setting aside a portion of all your income so that you have the money available to pay HMRC when your tax is due.

How it works

It’s very simple to begin using our Freelance contracting service:

  1.  We take you through our straight-forward Contractor Assessment to check that Freelance is an appropriate solution for you.
  2.  If it is, we take you through our on-boarding procedure which includes all the usual identity checks etc to ensure compliance.  It doesn’t take long! Then you’re set up and ready to work.
  3.  To get paid, you simply complete your timesheet and submit to your agency.
  4.  Your agency can then pass your gross payments to us (without making any tax, National Insurance or other deductions) and we pass payments onto you, minus  The income we retain from the  contract sum

We regularly remind all of the contractors we support about the need to complete a self-assessment tax return. You can access information about your payments whenever required through our secure online portal. We’re available to you for information, support and advice whenever required.
