WHAT DOES THE ELECTION RESULT MEAN TO THE OFF-PAYROLL (IR35) REFORMS?
Dec 13, 2019
This morning we’ve all awoken to news of a Conservative Party majority in Parliament which means that the proposed off-payroll (IR35) reforms are still very much on the agenda.
We will have to wait and see if the Chancellor holds to his pre-election promise to review the proposed reforms. Earlier this month, Sajid Javid told Radio 4’s Money Box programme that there would be a review of the proposed reforms if the Conservatives won the General Election.
He told the programme: “One thing in particular I want to look at is the proposed changes to IR35, these are the tax rules that apply to many self-employed people, particularly those that work as consultants… I want to make sure that the proposed changes are right to take forward so we will be having a review of those proposals and changes as part of our wider self-employment review.”
Given the relatively tight timeframe, and other priorities for the political agenda, it would be wise for contractors, employment agencies and end hirers to continue with their preparations.
With more than 20 years’ experience in contractor payroll and accountancy, we have continued to support contractors and employment agencies through a number of reforms over the years, including the introduction to off-payroll reforms in the public sector in 2017. This means we are well placed to help you navigate the new rules. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss any aspect.
